Members of the Community quite often ask; what does Y-USA provide to local Y's? They set a national strategic direction for our Y's based on community needs. We then assess our local needs and adopt those pieces of the national programs that will be of greatest fit here in Marquette County. LiveStrong, Enhanced Fitness, Diabetes Prevention, Early Learning Readiness, Reach & Rise are all national programs that we have adopted locally. In the Y-USA’s Strategic plan for 2012-2014, three critical signature programs were slated for development. Here is the three programs and an update of their status. Y SCHOOLS Y Schools establishes a full-time Y presence in 10 partner schools. Beyond the presence of our existing Y Afterschool Academy, Y Schools takes a more holistic approach to youth development by offering enhanced programs and services that extend from the opening bell to day’s end. YEAR ONE UPDATE Four of the 10 planned schools are identified and operating. They are: PS 197 in Far Rockaway; PS 57 in Staten Island; PS 200 in Harlem and PS 84 in Williamsburg. Y-MVP In an effort to further encourage and measure positive healthy behaviors, the Y is introducing an initiative that uses digital game design to increase and track kids Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity in all our YMCAs. YEAR ONE UPDATE Computer applications have been developed and refined. Pilot programs are underway in the Bedford-Stuyvesant and Harlem YMCAs. Y ROADS Y Roads focuses on helping young people who are not employed or in school find a foothold to success through a center-based model that builds on our strengths in counseling, work skills development as well as job placement. YEAR ONE UPDATE The first of three centers supporting disengaged young people has begun operation in Jamaica, Queens in partnership with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow. Although we currently are not engaged in the three identified programs, we continue to learn and assess what the needs are in our community, and may have the opportunity to bring these programs in the future.
